An Island of Safety in a Sea of Risk
Lindisfarne Investments is an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm that specializes in investing in Mutual Funds, Exchange Traded funds and equities.
Founded in January 2009 with offices in Bay Village, Ohio, we do independent research into the securities that we invest in. Our approach is a top down one, based upon using technical analysis to help us select the best performing sectors in the market. From there, we then identify the better performing securities within those sectors and chose ones that we believe work together to give you a well behaved portfolio. We do not try to “time the market”, rather looking for that area of the economy and market that offers the best return for the amount of risk that is taken.
The namesake of Lindisfarne Investments is a real place, Lindisfarne Island, located off the northeast coast of England near the Scottish border. The island has a long and storied past, filled with tales of legendary saints and Viking raids. Although called an island, Lindisfarne is actually a tombolo, or part time island, connected to the mainland by a sand bar which can be travelled only at low tide. At high tide, the sandbar is submerged and Lindisfarne becomes a true island, completely isolated from the mainland. For hundreds of year, pilgrims visiting the island would wait for low tide before making the journey. The romantic poet, Sir Walter Scott, described it thus:
Even today, the modern causeway connecting Lindisfarne to the mainland becomes submerged at high tide, and visitors to the island must wait for low tide to make their journey. This peculiar characteristic of Lindisfarne, of being connected yet isolated, worldly yet other-worldly, may be what first attracted Christian monks to the island many centuries ago. They could worship in splendid isolation, yet when the time was right (low tide) they could travel to the mainland to tend their flock. The ruin of the monastery the monks built still stands, as does Lindisfarne castle, built five centuries ago on an extinct volcano. The castle, surrounded by ocean, is pictured in our logo.
We chose the name Lindisfarne for our company because our investment philosophy echoes the desire of those ancient monks to be both connected and isolated. When the time is right, and market risk is low (“low tide”), we connect our investment clients, our investment “flock”, to the securities markets. In times of high risk (“high tide”), we isolate ourselves and our clients from market downturns. When the markets are awash in risk, we become, in essence, an island of safety.
